About Us

The origins of music lie in humanity's desire to communicate with the divine. In ancient times, instruments made from natural materials were used in religious rituals. In Anatolia, religious music that began in Göbeklitepe evolved further with the arrival of the Turks and the spread of Islam. In the 13th and 14th centuries, thinkers like Yunus Emre, Hacı Bektaş Veli, and Mevlana Rumi spread their teachings through music and poetry. After Mevlana's death, the Mevlevi Order was established, and music played an important role in transmitting Mevlevi teachings.

Mevlevi lodges became centers for art education, elevating music to professional levels. The Mevlevi Ceremonies, as the most magnificent form of Sufi music, created a rich musical heritage and allowed the integration of Turkish musical instruments. Classical Turkish Music, enriched by Mevlevi Ceremonies, gained significant recognition in world music. The Sufi Meshk Ensemble continues to preserve and honor this heritage, working to standardize the Mevlevi Ceremonies.

The Essence of Our Music

The essence of our music lies in its profound spiritual and cultural heritage. Rooted in the rich traditions of Classical Turkish Music and the Mevlevi Rites, our performances are a journey into the heart of Sufi mysticism. This music, which dates back to 1300 A.D., is not just an auditory experience but a bridge connecting us to the divine and to each other.

Our repertoire is deeply influenced by the teachings of Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi and other Sufi masters, whose poetry and philosophy emphasize love, tolerance, and the unity of all beings. The intricate melodies, rhythmic cycles, and poetic lyrics of our music are designed to elevate the soul, encouraging a state of inner peace and reflection.

At Sufi Meshk Ensemble, we strive to preserve the authenticity and purity of this ancient art form. Through meticulous practice and heartfelt performance, we aim to share the timeless beauty of Sufi music, inviting our audience to experience its transformative power.

The Mevlevi Rituals are religious ceremonies based on the teachings of Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi, performed by the Mevlevi Order.
